Safe tanning: what you should know

By the Sun & Sea team

Responsible tanning is the key to great results. UV exposure — from the sun or from a sunbed — always carries risk, so knowing your skin and following a few simple rules makes all the difference.

Over 18s only. Under Irish law, persons under 18 are not allowed to use sunbeds. Sunbed use increases the risk of skin and eye cancer.

Know your skin type

Fair skin that burns easily needs much shorter sessions than skin that tans quickly. If you're unsure, ask our team before your first session. If your skin burns and never tans, indoor tanning is not for you.

Choose the right session time

Start slowly — sessions of no more than 5–10 minutes, and three minutes or under if you have sensitive skin or no existing tan. Increase the time gradually and leave at least 48 hours between sessions. Never tan to the point of redness.

Protect your eyes

Always wear goggles, don't look at the lamps, and remove contact lenses before your session.

When you should not tan

  • If you or your family have a history of skin cancer.
  • If you are pregnant.
  • If you take medication that increases sensitivity to light (e.g. some antibiotics, antidepressants or acne treatments) — check with your doctor first.
  • If you have a photosensitivity disorder or an immune system disorder.
  • If you have consumed alcohol in the past 8 hours.

Listen to your body

If you feel too hot, faint, dizzy or unwell at any point, stop the session immediately. Check your skin regularly for new moles or changes to existing ones and report anything unusual to your doctor.
